Classic Literature Lesson Plans for ESL Students
Classic literature works best in English class when the lesson is concrete: one scene, a short set of words, a reason to speak, and a written response that uses the story.
Simple Lesson Structure
Preview the setting and problem, read a short section, answer comprehension questions, review key vocabulary, then use one speaking or writing prompt.
For mixed-level classes, keep the same scene but adjust the output. A2 learners can complete sentence frames, B1 learners can explain reasons, and B2 learners can compare themes.
Example Activities
For Frankenstein, ask students whether the creator is responsible for what he creates. For Treasure Island, ask students to sequence the map, voyage, and betrayal. For Pride and Prejudice, ask students to compare first impressions with later evidence.
Use answer keys for quick correction, then ask students to point to the sentence or scene that supports the answer.
