A2 vs B1 vs B2 Graded Readers: How to Choose
The right graded reader level is the one that lets a learner understand the story while still meeting useful new language. If every sentence is difficult, the level is too high. If the learner never pauses, the level may be too easy.
A2
Choose A2 when learners can follow short connected texts and need simple sentence structures, repeated concrete vocabulary, and clear scene movement.
A2 is useful for confidence, vocabulary preview, and supported homework.
B1
Choose B1 when learners can follow longer chapters, explain reasons, and handle some complex sentences with support.
B1 is often the best level for classroom discussion and steady independent reading.
B2
Choose B2 when learners want more nuance, abstract vocabulary, and literary atmosphere while still getting help with dense classic prose.
B2 works well for literature circles, theme comparison, and longer written responses.
